Exterior Finish

While the interior finishes commence, exterior finishes proceed as well. In fact, a couple of the exterior finish steps – namely stone & brick and stucco – can start once framing is complete.

Key Steps:

  • Apply stucco
  • Set exterior stone & brick
  • Install driveway, sidewalks, patios, etc.
  • Install decks and railings
  • Paint exterior
  • Install gutters & downspouts
  • Install sprinkler system, sod and landscaping

  • Drainage
  • Grading
  • Curbs & sidewalks
  • Driveway & approach/apron
  • Final survey

Key Steps Explained:

As we get into the exterior finishes, much like the interior finishes each is fairly self-explanatory.

After framing and roof installation are complete, installing stucco takes place. Stucco is a concrete-based finish for a home’s siding. A “weep screed,” which allows water to exit safely is installed, along with special channel material anywhere stucco will abut a different material, thus forming a seam. Expansion joints are placed periodically, and special flashings are installed to properly divert water. Next, a steel mesh with a tar paper/felt backing is installed in a ship-lap fashion which then accepts a based coat of special cement. This is followed by one or two finish coats, which may include an integral color and provide the finish texture.

If your home has stone and/or brick, those materials are set during this stage as well. The materials are set in place, connected by mortar and then finish-grouted. Decks are constructed & related railings are installed, the exterior of your home will be painted and gutters will be attached. The final flatwork components will be poured – driveway, patios, sidewalks, air-conditioner pads, etc. And your sprinklers, sod and landscaping – trees, flowers, shrubs, landscape lighting, etc. – will be installed.

Your project will be at the point where buttoning up some final lose ends is all that is left before you begin to enjoy your new home.
